e-RUPI (also spelled e-Ruppe) is a cashless, contactless digital voucher system launched by the Government of India and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to enable direct and leak-proof delivery of welfare benefits and services. It works as a prepaid, purpose-specific e-voucher delivered to beneficiaries via SMS or QR code, which can be redeemed at authorized service providers without needing a bank account, card, or digital app. By linking benefits directly to individuals and specific uses—such as healthcare, education, or subsidies—e-RUPI promotes financial inclusion, transparency, and efficiency in government and corporate welfare programs. However, challenges such as limited acceptance, digital access gaps, and privacy concerns remain as the system continues to evolve within India’s broader digital payment ecosystem.
